Unable to Install vCenter Server Appliance 6.5

I have been trying to Install vCenter Server Appliance in my Lab Environment but I kept receiving the following error when the services were trying to start. It kept stalling at 5% Starting VMware Identity Management Service.

Encountered an internal error. Traceback (most recent call last): File “/usr/lib/vmidentity/firstboot/”, line 2018, in main vmidentityFB.boot() File “/usr/lib/vmidentity/firstboot/”, line 349, in boot self.configureSTS(self.stsRetryCount, self.stsRetryInterval) File “/usr/lib/vmidentity/firstboot/”, line 1479, in configureSTS self.startSTSService() File “/usr/lib/vmidentity/firstboot/”, line 1141, in startSTSService returnCode = self.startService(self.sts_service_name, self.stsRetryCount * self.__stsRetryInterval) File “/usr/lib/vmidentity/firstboot/”, line 88, in startService return service_start(svc_name, wait_time) File “/usr/lib/vmware/site-packages/cis/”, line 784, in service_start raise ServiceStartException(svc_name) ServiceStartException: { “resolution”: null, “detail”: [ { “args”: [ “vmware-stsd” ], “id”: “install.ciscommon.service.failstart”, “localized”: “An error occurred while starting service ‘vmware-stsd'”, “translatable”: “An error occurred while starting service ‘%(0)s'” } ], “componentKey”: null, “problemId”: null }

I had been searching Google for fixes to the problem and I found the following fixes that I attempted –

  • Checked DNS – Confirmed FQDN’s were resolving correctly.
  • Tried deploying using an IP instead of a FQDN.
  • Try deploying a new vCenter Server Appliance – Received the same error as above.
  • Reset Host, SSO and CLI Passwords to the same password.
  • Adding echo “::1 localhost.localdom localhost” >> /etc/hosts to the appliance. Received the same error as above. You can find more details on this fix here.

All of these potential resolutions that I found resulted in the same error being received when trying to deploy the appliance.

You will be pleased to hear that I managed to finally find the issue, this issue was related to slow storage performance. I have blogged about it here. I found that ESXI 6.5 Upgraded the AHCI adapters on this host so therefore this caused a problem relating to local storage. If you are using local disks such as SSD’s this problem could be related, you should initially check via the ESXI Web UI If your local storage uses the AHCI adapters. If so you can run the following command via SSH –

esxcli system module set –enabled=false –module=vmw_ahci

When you have run this command on the affected host you will need to reboot the machine. Once this has been completed you should be able to deploy the vCenter Server Appliance successfully.
