SQL Management Studio 16.4.1 Visual Studio License: Prerelease software this license has expired

While creating a series on upgrading SQL from SQL 2014 to SQL 2016 I had a problem with Visual Studio after upgrading the SQL Management Studio to version 16.4.1. When opening the SQL Management Studio I received the following error –

“Visual Studio License: Prerelease software this license has expired”.

I Initially thought this was related to SQL Licensing but this was not the case. I connected to the SQL Server I had upgraded to SQL 2016 from another server and that worked successfully. I had a look around and managed to find the following fix for this issue.

You will need to Navigate to Control Panel and Repair the “Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 Shell (Isolated)” program in the list. When this is completed you will need to restart the machine. When this is resolved you will be able to use the SQL Management Studio version 16.4.1 successfully!
